WHAT IS THE VALUE OF CREATIVITY IN PRIMARY EDUCATION?
The creativity is still something that does
not have one only definition because is something general and too big for
defined in a sentence. There is something that I would like to add, that it is not
the same for example, the creativity that we use in an educational way than the
one that for example an engineer need to use to create something or look for a
solution.
In this case I am going to focused in the
educational creativity and I am going to explain if it is important and the
value of it in a primary school class.
First of all I would say that creativity is
the base of education, not just in primary, I would say from the Early Years
until university studies. A creative person means new ideas about a theme,
means new studies and new ideas about something.
In the educational way, there is something
that I really like and I will try to do as much as I can in my future, and is
just ask the children a question about something that we are talking about and
listen to the answers that they give me. What this exercise contribute you is
the different ways that pupils can think and that is a way to start doing a
debate with them. Also pupils start listening to the thoughts from someone else
and they could learn about those.
Letting the pupils think in a freeway, that
will grow up their minds as they practice using their minds and not just
listening on what the teacher said.
That is another thing that the teachers in
the future should change. Pupils used to listen and repeat what the teacher or
what a book says, as what the majority of the society thinks is that books and
teachers are always right. With the different thoughts of the children, easily
we can have different conclusions and ideas about different themes. And that is
a way of making our future growing properly. If we still continue educating
them as the education two or three centuries ago, our future will not grow up
and it will be monotonous.
As I said in other blogs before, I went
this last summer to make a volunteering in Cambodia. There were some activities
that I really want to do with the kids as it is about imagination, dreams and
creativity. One of those activities was just make a draw about what they would
like to be in a future. It is amazing how an easy activity could tell you and
how much could represent of a child. I was quite impress as the majority of the
boys draw that they would love to be a bus driver, but from the NGO and the
girls think to be princess or as well both of them, boy and girls they would
love to be one of the European monitors. I could not believe that I saw that.
Another thing that I enjoyed doing it was
another activity. There were different groups and they have to create with a
carton box and some watercolours a race car which they have to use to compete
against the other groups. It was amazing how their ideas came on and how they
create the car with not a lot of material.
For the last thing that I get so impress
too it was a moment with two small girls. There is a moment after the morning
shower that all the children have to wash their teeth with toothbrush that we
give to them. Suddenly I saw two girls playing with the toothbrushes on the
floor. They were running together and each of them with their toothbrush tied
to a long rope and carried as if they were their dogs. I could not say anything
as I was very surprised how their imagination and creativity works.
As I said before, another way to see easily
the creativity and imagination of a child is with the draw. In a draw a child
could say a lot of things without he or she knew it.
To sum up, creativity and imagination, I
will say that it is the main thing for a good education and we have to let the
children think in a free way as they will probably have very god ideas, and
their mind could just go as far as we cannot imagine. These children in a
future are the ones which are going to control our world and the future and
that is why we should let them think and debate on the different opinions from
the rest of the people. Another important thing, is not just the imagination
from the pupil, the teacher´s imagination is as important as the pupil’s ones
because they are the ones who control the situation, the ones which promotes
the theme to talk about and the ones who are going to show them the first bits
about every them and every subject.
